Churches throughout the world have begun to mark the period from September 1st to October 4th as the “season of creation”. At a time when the vulnerability of God’s creation to human activity has become a matter of vital concern, we have an opportunity to focus on appreciating and better understanding the “natural” world, and to work on restoring our relationship with it under God.
This year’s focus is “Let justice roll down” (Amos 5:24) – a reminder that the way we relate to the rest of creation affects the livelihood of our fellow human beings, both locally and globally.
To mark this time, we are preparing prayers for each Sunday, fitting a theme in one of the passages in the revised common lectionary for that day. We will send these out to churches early in August. (You may remember that we did something similar during Lent, and you may have noticed our rather last-minute offering for last year’s season of creation.)
Additionally, we are planning a prayer walk by the river in Saskatoon on the afternoon of Sunday October 1st. And a national prayer service is being planned for Friday September 1st. More information to follow on both....
We would love to hear of any other initiatives planned by congregations for the season. Together we can make a difference and see justice and peace roll down like a mighty river.
